A man was sentenced to life in prison without parole for a series of violent crimes against homeless people two years ago in Sacramento County, including the murders of a woman found shot to death in a burned trailer and a missing man found buried in a shallow grave at a golf course.
On Friday, Sacramento Superior Court Judge Stephen Acquisto sentenced Diego Cordova Flores, 50, for the violent crimes committed in a span of several days.
A jury on Dec. 17 found Flores guilty of two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, first-degree burglary, arson and four counts of being a convicted felon in possession of a gun, according to the Sacramento County district attorney’s office.
His conviction included special circumstance enhancements for committing multiple murders and using a gun in the crimes. Flores was convicted of murder in the deaths of Tina Gay Mack and Earl May, crimes that appeared to have been committed on the same day.
Prosecutors said the series of violent crimes began March 16, 2023, when Flores tried to kill a man by shooting him two times. That attempted murder victim survived his injuries.
On March 20, 2023, Flores burglarized a woman’s trailer and threatened to kill her after she called police, according to the district attorney’s office. Police officers responded and investigated the reported burglary.
The following morning, the Sacramento Fire Department responded to the same burglarized trailer that was now on fire. The firefighters found a woman, later identified as Mack, dead inside the trailer. Investigators determined the 60-year-old woman was killed by a single gunshot wound to the head.
Prosecutors said the investigation revealed Flores killed Mack and committed arson by burning her trailer.
Later on the same day firefighters found Mack’s body, Flores tried to kill another man by shooting him four times, according to the district attorney’s office. The man, whose injuries included a gunshot to the head, survived the shooting.
May’s shooting death occurred on or about March 20, 2023, according to the filed criminal complaint against Flores.
May was reported missing March 24, 2023, in the area of Roseville Road and Tri Stations Road, not far from where his body would be found a week later.
After May was reported missing, detectives received numerous reports that May might be dead, according to the Sacramento Police Department. Homicide detectives took over and conducted a suspicious death investigation.
The police detectives, with help from an FBI evidence response team, found May’s body March 31, 2023, near Roseville Road and Connie Drive. Prosecutors said May’s body was found buried on the grounds of the Haggin Oaks Golf Complex, and it appeared May had been shot in the back of the head.
Witnesses later identified Flores as the shooter in May’s death, according to the district attorney’s office. The prosecutors said the victims in Flores’ series of violent crimes were people experiencing homelessness living in tents or trailers.
Police officials later announced detectives on Aug. 28, 2023, arrested Flores on homicide charges. Sacramento County Jail records shows Flores had been in custody since March 27, 2023, on other criminal charges.
Flores on Wednesday remained in custody at the county’s Main Jail in downtown Sacramento awaiting to be transferred to a prison to serve his sentence.
