A 22-year-old woman has been charged in connection with a Saturday crash in unincorporated Hampshire Township that involved five children.

The woman, a resident of Streator, was driving north on Walker Road near Route 72 in unincorporated Hampshire Township around 6:35 p.m. when she failed to stop and the vehicle she was driving was struck by a semitruck, according to a news release from the Kane County sheriff’s office.

Four children, all under the age of 5 and in the Nissan Quest driven by the Streator woman, were transported to St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin with minor injuries. An 8-year-old, also in the Nissan Quest, was airlifted from St. Joseph’s Hospital in Elgin to a Chicago-area hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, according to the news release.

The driver of the Nissan was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital for minor injuries and a 25-year-old female passenger from Aurora was transported to a Rockford hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening, injuries, according to the sheriff’s office.

The driver of the semitruck, a 59-year-old man from Carpentersville, was not injured.

According to the news release, the Streator woman was driving north on Walker Road when she approached Route 72 and failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection. She attempted to turn west onto Route 72 when the car she was driving was struck by the semitruck. Traffic on Route 72 does not have a stop sign and has the right of way, according to the news release.

During the investigation, authorities learned that only one of the children was restrained in a child safety seat. The 25-year-old Aurora woman is the mother of all of the children involved in the crash, according to the news release.

The Nissan driver was charged with one count of driving without a valid license, one count of driving an uninsured vehicle, four courts of child endangerment and four counts of failure to restrain a child in a child safety seat, according to the news release.

Kane County Sheriff’s deputies along with the Hampshire Police Department and the Kane County Forest Preserve Police responded to the crash.
