Max Arfsten scored in the 61st minute, Sean Zawadzki added his first goal of the season and Patrick Schulte had five saves Saturday night to help the Columbus Crew beat the San Jose Earthquakes 2-1 in Ohio.
San Jose (3-6-1) has lost three consecutive games following a 6-1 win over D.C. United on April 6. The Earthquakes are 1-6-1 following back-to-back wins to open the season.
CoumbusArfsten flashed some fancy footwork, high-stepping through the left side of the area and eventually causing defender Max Floriani to fall down as his rising shot from the corner of the 6-yard box slipped under the cross bar to cap the scoring.
Zawadski made a sliding finish, redirected a free kick played to the far post from the left side by Diego Rossi back inside the near post to give the Crew a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute.
Beau Leroux played a through ball to Josef Martínez, who slipped behind the defense and, as goalkeeper Patrick Schulte charged off his line, chipped a shot into the net from near the left corner of the 6-yard box. Martínez has scored in back-to-back games and has all of his five goals this season in the last four matches, beginning with a hat trick in the 6-1 win over D.C. United.
Columbus (6-1-3) had a three-game win streak snapped last time out with a 1-0 loss to Inter Miami, ending a string of eight straight without a loss.

TENNIS
After losing a second straight opening match and three in a row overall, Novak Djokovic said he was facing a “new reality” in his two decades of pro tennis.
Djokovic’s public coming to terms with his rare losing streak came after he fell in straight sets to Matteo Arnaldi in his first match of the Madrid Open.
The 37-year-old Djokovic came to Spain after also losing his opener to Alejandro Tabilo at the Monte Carlo Masters two weeks ago and, before that, the Miami Open final.
“I was hoping I can play one more match than I played in Monte Carlo. (It’s) kind of a new reality for me,” Djokovic said.
On the women’s side, second-seeded Iga Swiatek defeated Linda Noskova 6-4, 6-2 as the defending champion advanced to the round of 16.
Americans Coco Gauff and Madison Keys also advanced with straight-set wins. Fourth-seeded Gauff beat compatriot Ann Li 6-2, 6-3, while the fifth-seeded Keys edged Anna Kalinskaya 7-5, 7-6 (3).
