Many of us have probably made a New Year’s resolution to lose weight and get healthy. Three weeks in and undoubtedly several of us are already floundering, the victim of our own busy schedules, procrastination and excuses.
Beginning a healthier lifestyle shouldn’t wait until after the holidays, after New Year’s, after that cruise or after the weekend.
Dr. Frank Dachtler D.C. is the director of HSWeightLoss in Broadview Heights, Brunswick, Norton and Beachwood, as well as Healthsource Chiropractic of Broadview Heights. He said now is the time because, ultimately, your life depends on it.
He fully understands the battle many of us fight.
Dr. Dachtler attended chiropractic school and has extensively studied nutrition, weight loss, chemistry and psychology: four intertwined aspects of health and fitness. Anyone who’s tried to lose weight knows nutrition is crucial, but there’s also the chemical response of the body and a mental component involved.
Using this knowledge, he helped develop HSWeightLoss, a tool to aid clients in not just weight loss, but attaining optimal health and lifetime benefits without gimmicks, pre-packaged foods or strenuous exercise. Dr. Dachtler himself used the program to lose 55 pounds in just 10 weeks.
The motivation and intent behind the development of this program is noble: the health and wellness of future generations.
“The United States now has a 30 percent obesity rate among children, and it seems to be getting worse,” he said. “We needed a plan. We needed something we could teach parents to help them dramatically lose weight. We needed something we could do to help change this in our own area of influence.”
HSWeightLoss is born
Dr. Dachtler graduated chiropractic school in 1998.
The weight loss side was adapted in 2006, using proven scientific data and research.
Dr. Dachtler, whose long been devoted to fitness even personally, envisioned an easy-to-learn program, something with far reaching impacts on not just clients but their realm of influence.
“I’ve been around weight loss and nutrition forever,” he said. “It’s always been a passion. The whole idea of this was, ‘let’s develop a healthy weight loss plan that focuses on support, education, proper eating, how to shop and not some gimmicks and pre-packaged foods, bars and shakes.' This had to be something easily learned and carried through life, so it can be passed on to family and friends, spouses and children.”
It happens to be a perfect fit for chiropractic care, Dr. Dachtler said, because nutrition can reduce inflammation and pain.
“We’re seeing patients getting off medications for cholesterol, diabetes, blood pressure and pain killers, because they’re not just losing weight, their body is changing chemically,” he said.
Healthy eating for life
Much more than a diet, this program is healthy eating for life.
There are some dietary restrictions during the initial phases and natural supplementation, but after the goal weight is achieved, it’s much more about lasting health, education and lifestyle changes.
The program is six weeks to six months in duration and can be repeated if necessary. Clients can expect to lose 20-40 pounds the first 6-8 weeks; however, this varies with each patient and adherence. Staff provides support, encouraging patients with a quick text or call; each patient is monitored by a doctor, their personal weight loss coach, and this same physician sees them regularly; and once every week or two, patients’ body composition is calculated to ensure they are hydrated and sustaining muscle mass while reducing fat.
Shortly after developing the program, Dr. Dachtler ironically found himself in need of it.
“At the time, I had also been working with our corporate HealthSource team, and there was a lot of pressure. Although I had all the knowledge and knew what to do, I had put on weight myself,” he admits.
But he used this experience to better relate to patients’ struggles.
“I don’t just show patients what needs to be done, but I understand completely the cravings and the stress eating. I know exactly what is going through their mind at 10 o’clock at night when they are fighting the urge to grab a cookie from the pantry,” he said. “The mental and emotional side is very strong.”
In life, many happy occasions revolve around food. We eat to celebrate a wedding, a graduation, a birthday and an anniversary.
“We try to get away from that, worship it less and see it for what it is,” Dr. Dachtler explained. “I still eat pizza and hamburgers and go out to dinner, but my habits have changed for the better. You still live your life, but life doesn’t revolve around food anymore.”
There are several different programs out there, and some are similar, but none are quite like HSWeightloss, which is unique for the guidance that may be lacking at a doctor’s office and the amount of education they receive.
“Many medical doctors tell their patients they need to lose weight, but don’t really explain how to,” Dr. Dachtler said. “We spend time with our patients at their exams. They learn how to eat at home, how to shop, what to order at a restaurant, what choices to make at a party.”
New patients can now receive the introductory body composition and analysis, typically $145, for $27. Because the food is healthy, grocery store items and there are restrictions, many people find they save $300 a month in their normal shopping habits.
“This really pays for itself,” he said.
More than a career
Dr. Dachtler is continually rejuvenated by clients. He said he is motivated by watching someone succeed who has struggled most their life, witnessing a client’s applause at the scale or watching a client successfully maintain the weight loss long term.
“I love what I do. I couldn’t imagine anything else. I love seeing the results, people smiling and telling me how they are sleeping better, getting compliments, able to tie their shoes without breathing heavily, playing on the floor with their kids and are able to get back up,” he said. “It never gets old. If someone loses weight, they’re going to add years and quality to their lives and that will trickle down to their loved ones, too.”
The key is taking that first step toward health.
“At what point do you say, ‘enough is enough, I need to do this?’ Weight issues are stealing days and robbing you of both quantity and quality of life,” Dr. Dachtler said. “There’s never a bad time to start this. You just have to get beyond yourself and stop making excuses.”
