WADSWORTH – During that glorious week in June, the Blue Tip Festival might seem like all fun and games, but later this year, monies raised from the festival will be doled out to local nonprofits as a way to benefit many in the community.

The committee will start accepting applications from local nonprofit groups in the fall and then will award grants for specific initiatives or projects that will benefit people in the Wadsworth community during a special ceremony in November.

“We are definitely trying to raise awareness and want everyone to know that we are giving what we raise in profits back to the community,” said Mike Leavitt, president of the Blue Tip Committee.

Last year the Blue Tip committee distributed nearly $30,000 in donations to local nonprofit groups – an all-time high for the committee.

Recipients of last year’s donations included Downtown Wadsworth, Salvation Army, Mosaic, Wadsworth FISH, Friends of Wadsworth Trails, Girl Scouts, Lincoln Elementary School, Marian’s Closet, Meals on Wheels, Wadsworth United Methodist Church, Wadsworth Rotary, Salvation Army Auxiliary, Wadsworth Police Department, Sidekicks, GKidz, Really Recovered, Ohio Special Response, Wadsworth Band Boosters, Wadsworth Public Radio, Oasis, Kids History Day, St. Vincent de Paul Society, The Giving Doll, Soprema Center and Café, Wadsworth Community Dog Park, Farmer’s Market and Hooked on Fishing.

Tom Morris, treasurer of the Blue Tip Committee, said he is hopeful for another record year.

“We have beaten the record from the previous year for the last four years in a row,” Morris said. “I hope we can keep it up. Right now we are already ahead of where we were last year.”

Leavitt said the goal is to raise more money each year.

“We want to keep growing and not stop,” he said. “This group is never going to be satisfied without setting the bar higher.”
