“I am a maximalist.”

This is how Nancy Revis — owner of Uber Optics in Petaluma — opens our interview. It’s clear from the décor of the shop, and Nancy’s well-curated individualist sense of style, that for her, more is more. Revis describes her business as “an extremely unique eyewear boutique to the max, a unicorn of an optical boutique that encapsulates nostalgia and pulls the soul of your life to where you need to be now.”

With visible references to pop culture, music and other fun details, the shop offers each customer a memorable personal experience.

Revis studied marketing at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with an emphasis on design and fashion. Her college job was working at an optical shop where she was introduced to this line of work. She also has a strong retail background, including creating window displays for Nordstrom.

“I love everything about making things crazy,” she says. Elizabeth Aguilar, the manager of Uber Optics, used to work with Revis in Marin. Months later, the two reconnected on social media and now are “sister soldiers” in running the business. Both have been certified opticians for over 30 years, and have no trouble completing each other’s sentences.

The riotous décor at Uber Optics all stems from Revis’s life, she explains. Born in the ’70s, a member of GenX, she considers herself a peer of many customers who are coming in for their first pair of progressives and are trying to wrap their mind around transitions, in both lenses and life. Posters of Prince, a ’70s music soundtrack and purple walls all reflect the owner’s aesthetic, and provide a welcoming atmosphere that immediately distinguishes the space from more intimidating optical outlets.

“I’m just gonna be me,” Revis confesses.

She opened the store in 2012, on Tax Day. After working for another optical boutique in Mill Valley, she was tired of fueling someone else’s creative dreams and wanted to fuel her own. She carefully observed Petaluma after moving up from Novato with her family.

“It was an edgy town, there was music, the 60-year-olds had tattoos. This was my place,” she says.

When the downtown location came open, she already had a business plan and a Pinterest board for décor. It all came together quickly. Dozens of other businesses wanted the location, but the owner loved Revis’s concept and the spot was hers. Uber Optics was born, the first independent optical boutique in Petaluma.

Revis’s marketing strategy includes daily social media posts.

“You can’t let people forget about you,” she said.

Perhaps Revis’ most creative form of marketing is the shop’s ever-evolving window display.

“My windows are everything,” she said. “I design them in a way that they tell a story, reflective of a particular space, moment in time, or memory.”

The displays rotate monthly, and from the feedback she’s received, Revis has come to realize that the community looks forward to seeing what she’ll do next. Past favorites include windows with a “Welcome Back Kotter,” Boho Chic and “Barbarella” theme. It’s all just another form of personal expression. The store is Revis’ canvas.

The inventory is vast and diverse, with a variety of styles, lenses and price points — something for everyone. The store also carries non-prescription readers and sunglasses, vintage glasses, cases, ropes and other eyewear accessories.
