Cleveland Clinic Akron General is constructing a $49.3 million building that will more than triple the size of its downtown emergency department and will help enhance patient experience.
“This new emergency department is a very visible example of Cleveland Clinic Akron General’s commitment to meeting the health care needs of the residents of Akron and the surrounding communities,” said Brian Harte, MD, president of Akron General. “As a regional Level I Trauma Center, we serve patients with critical injuries and this investment will help us provide the highest quality care in the most efficient manner possible.”
The new emergency department is designed to expedite the process from admittance through discharge. The 67,000-square-foot building will include: sixty total treatment rooms; four high-acuity trauma rooms; an imaging department, including a CT scanner and two radiographic rooms; and a new designated area for PATH (Providing Access to Healing) which serves patients seeking treatment from Akron General’s Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner program.
The new emergency department is scheduled to open in the second half of 2018. It will be located on the first floor of the new building and a new second-floor bridge will connect it to the main hospital. Administrative offices will be located on the second floor along with space for future expansion.
As a Level I Trauma Center, as designated by the American College of Surgeons (ACS), Akron General offers the technology, expertise and staffing to treat all injuries. Operating rooms, diagnostic services and trauma specialists are on-call 24-hours a day. Akron General also has the longest-standing community-based emergency residency-training program in the world, celebrating 45 years.
