YORK TOWNSHIP – The Buckeye Local School Board named resident Jennifer Knapp as the district’s new treasurer during a special meeting July 13.
Knapp serves as assistant treasurer at Nordonia Hills Schools in Summit County and will start her position Aug. 7. She is replacing Carolyn Weglewski, who is retiring after over 20 years with the district.
Knapp will be paid $88,000 per year and received a three-year contract.
Board President Barb Gunkelman said there were 17 candidates who applied for the position and said Knapp’s skillset stood out. Along with serving as assistant treasurer, Knapp previously served as the food service director at Wadsworth City Schools.
“While working for Nordonia, they exposed her to a lot of different things so she is ready to be treasurer,” Gunkelman said. “She stood out among the other candidates.”
Knapp is also a Buckeye High graduate and currently has children enrolled in Buckeye Schools, a fact Gunkelman said was not part of the board’s decision but is nice to see.
The board met frequently over the last few weeks in private executive session to narrow down the final candidates, Gunkelman said.
The superintendent and the treasurer are the two positions where board members are primarily responsible for hiring a candidate.
