Royalton: Vote ‘no’ until we see a better business plan
To the Editor:
I am a North Royalton graduate, lifelong resident and former first-time school board candidate. For those of the 2,400-plus that voted for me, thank you. It was my intention to help point the school board in the right direction, get the funds that are needed and advise the construction council proper protocol in moving forward with the immediate needs required for our schools.
Issue 11 is a potential bankruptcy waiting to happen. There are many other cost effective options in resolving the immediate needs that have not been addressed.
The school buildings they want to tear down are better structurally sound today, then what is achievable by today’s standards based on the 1950’s construction bomb threat format.
These same schools can be gutted and retrofitted and become state of the art facilities for a much more reasonable revenue.
Take at look at Parma Fay. It was built for millions and then shut down a short period later.
North Royalton enrollment is on a decline.
Is demolition and the widening of State and 82 factored in?
It is no secret our schools are in need of improvements. It is a secret that the schools were neglected and warranties were not utilized in hopes of obtaining future funding.
So, how about a plan for $30 million to fix immediate needs, and another $15 million next time around for continued improvements? How about a co-pay is implemented for the staff? That alone could contribute $3 to $5 million annually to the cause.
Better yet, not my claim but a great idea, how about we get local tradesmen to work at discounted rates to do the urgent needed improvements to help the cause?
Voters, use your heads when writing checks. It is your money. You work for it. Ask yourself, the $88 million they seek, are you okay with Basic Construction 101 cost over runs, not factored in the $151 million with interest over the next 30 years? Ask yourself, is it not a form of extortion, that if you don’t vote yes, things will be taken away from the students?
Vote “no” until a better business plan is put on paper.
