May is National Drug Court Month
In celebration of National Drug Court Month, the Medina County Court of Common Pleas General Division and Probation Department will be hosting an event on the Medina City Square Thursday, May 11 from noon to 3 p.m.

Together with guest speakers and refreshments, we will be honored to present singer/songwriter Matt Butler. Matt’s style is that of Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan; Matt’s goal is to inspire recovery from addiction. We hope that you will join Matt as we celebrate lives changed through drug courts.

The Drug Court Awareness event is one of many community outreach efforts by the Medina County Court of Common Pleas to increase awareness of the heroin epidemic and overall drug abuse problem in Medina County.

Treatment courts are this nation’s most effective strategy to reduce recidivism among substance-addicted, nonviolent offenders with criminal histories. Nationally, 75 percent of individuals who complete such programs are not re-arrested. These courts save up to $13,000 for every individual they serve and return as much as $27 for every $1 invested. Research continues to show that treatment courts work better than jail or prison, better than probation, and better than treatment alone.

But recovery doesn’t end upon graduation from a treatment court. Nor should an individual need to commit a crime to have access to treatment opportunities. That is why the Medina County Court of Common Pleas and Adult Probation Department, along with the organization Robby’s Voice, are working to establish a Recovery Resource Center in Medina County.

The services to be offered by the center are many and varied. Recovery services include peer support meetings, including triaging people to help them find resources available in the community, such as AA or NA meetings, grief support and so on. Vocational and educational opportunities would include a proposed culinary program, manufacturing program, recovery coach training, life skills training, and training in financial literacy and GED tutoring. There would be an opportunity to provide cognitive based groups such as Thinking for a Change or Courage to Change. Practical support would include family support groups, legal assistance, grief counseling, trauma counseling and health and dental screenings through our health department.

Such a center will provide an opportunity to bring community support services together in one location for Medina County residents at any stage in their addiction or recovery. It will also serve as a location where residents’ social needs can be met in a sober environment. The Recovery Resource Center will be a safe place of support for individuals in and seeking recovery, family members, friends, and anyone impacted by the disease of addiction.

The Medina County Court of Common Pleas and Adult Probation Department are excited to collaborate with Robby’s Voice as our community non-profit partner to together create a resource that goes beyond punishment, truly embracing rehabilitation and recidivism reduction, while working to reduce stigma and providing opportunities for the healing of the community.
