SEVILLE – With 30 years of nursing experience under her belt, Dora Richardson has been involved in many facets of health care.
While nursing has always been her passion, Richardson has truly found her stride as the owner of After Hours Family Medicine, where she treats more than 6,000 patients and offers services similar to that of a traditional doctor’s office.
She has worked as a trauma nurse and also in emergency medicine. As a certified nurse practitioner, she has worked in several different practices and also wound care and long-term care.
“I like to empower my patients and I get so excited when I see them come back and they have worked hard doing what it takes to get better,” she said. “In emergency medicine, it was instant care and then you never heard from the patient again and you don’t know what happened to them. I like getting to see my patients again and helping them get better and seeing them get in the right direction.”
Nursing was Richardson’s No. 1 career choice even as a little girl. It was in her blood.
“My mom was an Army nurse from World War II working in the operating room,” Richardson said, adding her mother also worked as a nurse at a hospital after returning from the war. “I think that was one of the reasons I wanted to be a nurse. It was my passion and my path.”
As a nurse practitioner, Richardson can prescribe medication and can treat patients for a number of ailments including upper respiratory infections, colds, ear infections and chronic illnesses. She treats patients of all ages, including infants, and can handle trigger injections and minor surgeries like the removal of moles and skin tags.
Richardson’s office can also take care of drawing blood and sending it off to the lab.
“There is a pickup every evening and we can have most results by the next morning,” she said.
Richardson can also perform physicals for patients.
“We are very busy in the summer and fall because we do a lot of sports physicals,” she said. “I know how expensive that can be, so we offer $20 sports physicals for patients 18 and under and also $15 for work physicals for students who need to have a physical before they can start working. When you are trying to get your first job, you don’t want to wait six weeks until you can see your family doctor.”
Richardson said her office regularly schedules same-day or next-day appointments.
“We see a lot of sick kids when parents don’t want to wait to have them get to their pediatricians,” she said. “Getting patients in quickly seems to be difficult for bigger practices.”
Instead of a call center like some medical practices have, calls from patients contacting After Hours Family Medicine go straight to the office. After Hours Family Medicine is open 3 to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
“We get to know our patients,” she said. “We want to know who you are and work around your schedule. We work to have more flexible hours. This way patients hopefully won’t have to leave work or take time off if they need to come in.”
Richardson currently has five employees – a registered nurse and four medical assistants. She said she would love to add another nurse practitioner to the practice in the future.
After Hours Family Medicine is located at 18 E. Main St. in Seville. Richardson said the facility has been a medical office for the last 80 years.
“I think at least six or seven doctors have used this facility,” she said. “It is so much fun when patients will come in and tell me how they remember coming to this office as a kid.”
Richardson said she is always accepting new patients. The office can be reached at 330-975-4255.
