MEDINA - As spring approaches, so does an increase of roadwork around town, while at the same time, the city continues to prepare itself for some major development projects.

The city of Medina's economic development office will soon be publishing its e-newsletter every Friday with internal articles about development projects, as well as a special section on city road construction updates fittingly titled "Barrels and Cones."

"We are heading into a very busy time and we want everyone who lives, works or travels through the city to have current and accurate information," said Kimberly Marshall, the city's economic development director.

On the books for development, Medina City Council is expected to move forward on plans for a multimillion-dollar parking structure on North Elmwood Avenue that will hopefully attract the interest of private developers wanting to add commercial and residential options to the downtown area.

A similar commercial-residential project is in the works this year at the hands of a private developer at the corner of Friendship and North Court Streets.

In June 2014, the city adopted its Downtown Strategic Plan, essentially a map of the city's Historic District identifying target areas with potential for commercial and residential redevelopment. A housing study was also conducted, which called for "an immediate need" for over 400 additional residential units in the downtown area.

With respect to roadwork, the current big project is the Ohio Department of Transportation's multimillion U.S. Route 42 (North Court Street) improvement. Already underway, the affected area stretches about a mile and a half from Harding Street to just north of the city limits at Fenn Road in Medina Township.

Other smaller roadwork projects are also on the city's books, like the remainder of West Smith Road and various smaller jobs like culvert replacements.

"Our staff meets regularly with ODOT and we are working with the Greater Medina Chamber of Commerce to assist the businesses in the construction areas to weather these projects," Marshall said. "It's extremely critical that we do everything we can to support our businesses."
