MEDINA – For 10 years, Woodsy’s has been an instrumental part of the community, sharing the gift of song and making sweet music alongside customers.

To say everyone at Woodsy’s Music of Medina is musically inclined would be an understatement.

Each member of the staff – owner and manager Greg Crowe; Jon Gordon, guitar tech and guitar sales; Nick Penfound, woodwind tech and band department sales; Cathy Grady, lesson coordinator, orchestra department sales and fiddle and orchestral teacher; and Andy Platz, brass repair tech and trumpet teacher – not only has a way with customers, but a way with instruments as a musician.

“We’re a mom and pop store, a family of employees who are all musicians. The knowledge each employee has sets us apart from the big box store. Everyone here is a musician, not just a sales person,” Crowe said.

He fell in love with music in the 1960s when Beatlemania swept everyone off their feet.

“The Beatles influence is what got me started,” he smiled. “I’m a guitar player. And, my mother was a concert pianist, so music is in the family.”

Woodsy’s opened at 110 W. Liberty a decade ago as a satellite store of Woodsy’s Music Inc. in Kent. This specialty store is truly a one-stop shop offering not only instruments, sheet music and accessories, but also repairs and even lessons for all ages, including adults.

“We have guitars, violins, ukuleles, all band and orchestra instruments, all the bells and whistles and trimmings: reeds, strings, straps. Our pricing is very competitive with online pricing, even though we are a physical store,” Crowe said. “We really are a music service company even though we have lots of products to sell. We do repairs, rentals and lessons.”

Right now, nearly 300 students are enrolled and sharpening their talent under the tutelage of 20 teachers in 11 lesson rooms in the store’s lower level.

“Lessons really create a lot of our traffic with 300 kids, 300 families coming into the store every week,” Crowe said. “We really are a music education company. We start right from the beginning in fourth and fifth grade and go right up into college level.”

Not only this, Woodsy’s services all of the schools in Medina County, renting instruments and conducting any needed repairs on four benches. This is something Crowe takes pride in, helping to shape and influence the next generation to have a deep love and appreciation for music.

“The schools have a complete music facility right here in downtown Medina. We want to support our community and all the people who live and work here,” Crowe said.

Keeping in tune with the spirit of community, Woodsy’s conducted an instrument demonstration of the ukulele, banjo, mandolin and guitar at the Medina Library on March 4.

And on April 1, the store is hosting its annual student recital, an opportunity for those enrolled in lessons to showcase what they have learned to friends and family, while also providing stage experience.

“They get to play in front of a crowd and get the stage fright bugs out,” Crowe said.

And each summer, the store offers a six-week rock school for guitar and combo students where they can learn to play in a band and class culminates with a free concert on the green, open to the public. Sign up begins June 1.
