MEDINA – An elementary teacher turned real estate agent is making buying and selling homes as easy as learning your ABCs.

For 25 years, Jamie Powers, a Howard Hanna real estate agent, has followed two golden rules for success: Take care of the client, and make education a priority.

Her principles have put her at the head of her class.

She’s ranked among the top 1 percent of Realtors nationwide; for the past 20 years, she’s been a top producing agent in Medina County and last year her team produced $37 million in transactions.

“Yes, we do a lot of business, but it’s not about the numbers, it’s not about the commission, it’s not about the paycheck. That’s not the driving force,” Powers said. “The most important thing is that we take care of the client.”

Being a former teacher, there’s no doubt education is pivotal.

“Education is important because the more we know, the more we can help our clients.”

The ABCs of success
Anyone who has ever bought or sold a home knows the process can be emotional.

Powers understands this. Her goals are simple: Help the client achieve theirs and take as much stress off in the process as possible.

“I worked with a woman recently and there were tear stains all over her listing paperwork. She loved Medina, but had to leave,” she said. “People always think of real estate as being fun and exciting, and it can be, but a lot of times you are a counselor. There are divorces, deaths. These are people’s lives, and that’s very important to me. It’s never about the houses, this job is about the people. It’s a people business, a service business.”

Coupled with her healthy portfolio, Powers’ education – certified residential specialist, certified marketing professional, certified new home specialist, relocation specialist, homes of distinction specialist and ePro – provides peace of mind that she has the knowledge and experience required to get the job done.

“This business is always changing, so it comes back to education: Educating the buyer, educating the seller,” she said. “I teach people how to build houses, how to buy houses, how to sell houses every day. The two reasons a home does not sell is price and condition. We use every tool and think outside the box and do everything we can to get their homes sold.”

In addition to her knowhow, Powers has access to the top marketing tools of the trade through her partnership with Howard Hanna, recognized as the No. 1 real estate agency in Ohio.

One of those tools is the Internet, as most buyers begin their search for a new home online.

“The Internet is so critical, pictures are so critical,” Powers said. “We have all the tools like Zillow, Trulia, Realtor.com. We also have professional stagers, professional photographers, we’ve used drones, whatever is necessary.”

The Internet is a significant component, but it doesn’t sell homes alone. It takes people, too.

“The Internet has gotten huge, but it’s the human element that sometimes gets lost in our fast-paced world. I have open lines of communication. I want my clients to know I will get the job done, they know I’m working, they know I’m going to take care of them,” she said.

Howard Hanna is a one-stop shop for those in the market to buy or sell. Her team consists of a new construction specialist, accredited buyers agents and investors. The agency also owns a bank.

“So people can come in and get their mortgage here, we even do insurance,” she said. “It all goes back to taking care of the client.”

At home in real estate
A love of helping people, a love of learning, it’s no wonder Powers’ teaching abilities transferred into real estate.

Her first teaching job was in Brunswick. When she took time off to stay home with her three children, she soon learned she wanted a career that would give her flexibility and precious time with her family. Her youngest, MacKensey, was just 3 when Powers earned her real estate license. MacKensey now works alongside her, learning the ropes from the best.

Powers said it’s easy to sell something she believes in.

“I’ve been very blessed. When you have a community like this, it’s easy to sell it. The people here are friendly and hardworking,” she said. “Medina is a special place.”

Ken and Char Kubik have been clients of Powers ever since she sold them their first home 22 years ago, and they can attest to Powers’ skill and way with people.

“She is persistent, she cares about her job, she does an excellent job, you can call her at any time and ask her any question and she always has an answer or will get you the answer. Her customer base is huge. She has kids of the people she has sold houses to now,” Ken said. “She’s a great person, she really is. We always go back to her because she is very successful at what she does. She’s a good-hearted person, and now she is teaching her daughter so I’m sure her daughter will be great at this too.”
