Up, down and all around town
Wadsworth Post editor Emily Canning-Dean
Hello Wadsworth.

There are many reasons I love my job, but probably one of my favorite thing about being the editor of The Wadsworth Post is the opportunity to talk to so many interesting people.

Just in the last couple of weeks I have interviewed a Wadsworth native who is an aspiring country singer and just won an Ohio Music Award; a Wadsworth police officer whose quick thinking meant an elderly woman was safely removed from a burning vehicle; and a Wadsworth High School alum who has dedicated his career to innovation in MRI.

To the average observer, Wadsworth might seem like just a small northeast Ohio town, but to me it’s clear many talented and fascinating individuals hail from Grizzly Country. Check out stories about each of these amazing people in this week’s edition of The Post.

Now let’s take a look around town.

Rosie Awards

The Wadsworth Area Chamber of Commerce is accepting nominations in eight categories for the 2017 Rosie Awards. The awards honor outstanding individuals, business and organizations that make Wadsworth a great place to live and work. The nomination form is available on the home page of the chamber’s website, www.wadsworthchamber.com.

Nominations are expected in January and February. In March, the chamber compiles all of the information needed from the nominees and the membership votes via an online survey. Award recipients are chosen from the top three vote getters by a chamber committee.

The awards will be presented at a special evening event Wednesday, April 19 at The Galaxy.

For additional information contact the Wadsworth Area Chamber of Commerce at 330-336-6150 or business@wadsworthchamber.com.

Citizenship scholarship

Medina County Auditor Mike Kovack’s office is offering a $500 citizenship scholarship to a Wadsworth High School senior with a grade point average of 3.0 or better.

The winning senior must complete an application form and write an essay discussing an issue or event that caused him or her to contemplate injustice or fairness in their world.

For complete information about the Citizenship Scholarship, students may go online and download the application from the “Scholarships” link at www.medinacountyauditor.org.

The form is also available through the Wadsworth High School guidance office.

Concert to bring awareness to sex trafficking

Remedy Drive, an alternative Christian rock band, will be performing at First Baptist Church in Seville Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. in an effort to raise awareness about sex trafficking in the area and around the country. The group performed at Northside Christian Church in Wadsworth back in 2014.

The band will talk about the work they are doing with The Exodus Road overseas and specifically lead singer David Zach’s involvement as an undercover operative and his stories from the front lines.

Tickets are $14 online and $16 at the door and are currently available through the church website or Facebook page. More information and group sale information are available by contacting the church directly at 330-769-2435.

Used smartphones needed

Anyone who has recently upgraded their smartphone and are wondering what to do with their old one can take them to Franklin Elementary School as a tax deductible donation.

The phones will be used for Google Expeditions, an application that will take classrooms of students on virtual field trips all over the world and into the universe. The folks at Franklin have a goal to collect 30 devices.

You can clear out the phone data on your own or the technology staff at Wadsworth City Schools can wipe out the phone for you.

Phones the school can use include iPhone (5, 5C, 6, 6+, 6S or 6S +); LG/Google Nexus (4, 5, 5X or 6P); or Samsung Galaxy (S4, S5, S6, S7, Note 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6).

Phones should be taken to the Franklin School office. If you desire a tax deductible letter statement, write a note with your name and address and attach it to the phone. For questions call 330-335-1470.

Nonprofit fair

The Wadsworth Area Chamber of Commerce will include a nonprofit fair during their monthly luncheon at the Galaxy Jan. 25.

Area and county nonprofit organizations will be on hand to highlight their services and programs so chamber members can become familiar with their organizations for utilizing, supporting and volunteering.

The chamber meets on the fourth Wednesday of every month for networking, lunch and a business-related program.

Social networking will begin at 11 a.m. and lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. The meeting will conclude at 1 p.m. Lunch is $15 and reservations are requested to the chamber office by Jan. 22.

Community members are always welcome to attend the luncheons.

Jeff Sessions, who has been nominated for the position of United States Attorney General. He also had a meeting with President Donald Trump back in November.
