Prevention and treatment are keys to fighting addiction
Christopher Collier
There are no words to describe the impact heroin addiction has on our community. Heroin addiction destroys and ruins lives.

The heroin problem became worse across the country with the overprescribing of pain medications in the late 2000s. The price of drugs like oxycodone increased for users while the cost of heroin decreased.

Prevention and treatment are two keys to fighting heroin addiction.

Residential treatment, Recovery Center, Intensive outpatient, Methadone house, Halfway house, Three-quarter way house, and so on. Find out what these terms really mean and what services we provide in Medina County.

The continuum of care starts with diagnostic services. A licensed clinician, to determine specific diagnosis and treatment recommendations, administers a diagnostic assessment.

Depending on the severity of addiction indicated in the assessment one may be referred for a multitude of services.

Inpatient Detox is hospitalization for those to safely withdrawal from drugs and/or alcohol. It should be noted that if an individual has an opiate addiction, a hospital may or may not take them depending on if they conclude it is medically necessary. However, withdrawal from alcohol or benzodiazepines must be a hospitalized detox as this withdrawal without medical attention can be fatal.

Ambulatory Detox is designed for those who are addicted to opiates only, as those who have other addictions can typically find a hospital that will take them to safely get off alcohol or drugs. This is an outpatient service where a medical professional will monitor and treat opioid withdrawal safely and comfortably.

Medication Assisted Treatment is for those who are struggling with an opiate addiction, and medication can include Suboxone, Methadone, Vivitrol or Naltrexone. It should be noted that if one is going in MAT, treatment must accompany it, as this is a best practice guideline.

Residential Treatment is a live-in facility where an individual who has been detoxed from all alcohol and drugs lives for 30-90 days typically. On site there are 24-hour monitoring services and clinical staff to help educate and support someone early on in their sobriety. High accountability, random drug testing and gender specific living environments usually constitute a residential treatment facility. Once the individual graduates from this level of care, the next step is outpatient treatment services.

So, what is a three-quarter way house? The main differences between a halfway house and a three-quarter way house are length of sobriety, commitment, and added freedoms, such as later curfews.
