There has to be some sort of protection for senior citizens

To the Editor:
A little background information: My husband and I and our three sons moved to North Royalton 38 years ago. We did not know that the street we moved to at that time resided in the Brecksville-Broadview School District until the day we went to enroll at St. Albert the Great. We were quite surprised at that time.

Out of all our sons’ school years, kindergarten through 12th grade, we used the public school district for a total of seven years. Brecksville School District, five years and North Royalton, two years. All of the other years were private schools. We paid taxes for 12½ years to Brecksville and for the past 25½ years to North Royalton. We are very proud of our sons and the education they received has made them very successful people. Education is one of the most important privileges in our society today.

As everyone can equate to, taxes everywhere are outlandish. We love North Royalton and believe in good education. It is the success of our future. North Royalton provides excellent schools and they are very important.

However, I am speaking now as a senior citizen who would like to retire. Right now, my taxes are more than my house payment. Another increase in taxes on fixed incomes will be devastating. My project, currently, is to figure out how I can remain in my home and retire at the same time. Really, I believe it will be impossible. The ever increasing taxes and expenses and, not to mention, medical and prescription costs overall have totally ruined this senior’s hope to retire.

There has to be some protection for the seniors. We are not young professionals earning good salaries who are able to increase our income over the years to come. We don’t have that many years left. Something has got to be done to alleviate the seniors from these constant increases.

I have written to Mr. Kasich regarding the tax issues, however, he has yet to comment. The seniors need help in lowering their expenses. When the young ones become seniors, I surely hope they will have enough money to retire and still live in their homes without having to worry just how they will do that. Save your hard earned money now because who knows just what everything will cost by then.

Today, prices are totally ridiculous. Today’s generation will never understand what is was to pay 39 cents for a loaf of bread. When today it costs $4 to $5 for that loaf of bread. And car prices – today, cars cost more than our first house did.

Not sure just what the future will bring. I do know that getting a quality education is one of the most important steps in life. Our society today only knows how to spend, spend, spend, throw things out and buy new possessions. Our generation came from use and reuse, fix and re-fix and take care and respect everything you own.

Long story short – Seniors need to be released from taxes!
