MEDINA – Area drivers may see a proliferation of orange barrels on county roads after county commissioners approve a series of road projects recommend by the County Engineer July 18.

Among the projects is a $135,000 contract awarded to Dura Mark Inc. to paint new pavement markings on 104 miles of county roads this summer. The new markings will be applied to about one-third of all roads maintained by the county.

Chippewa, Smith and Hamilton roads will also be subject to interruptions in traffic as a result of contracts awards to make repairs on those roads.

Parts of Smith Road in York and Lafayette townships is in store for pavement improvements to be done by Barbicas Construction Companies at a cost of $192,000.

Barbicas also won a $780,000 bid to improve Hamilton Road in York and Medina townships. Hamilton may be closed to through traffic during some phases of the paving project.

Chippewa Road may also be closed between Lake Road and state Route 3 during some phases of a resurfacing project planned there.

In addition, Stone Road in York Townships and Wandel Road in Homer Township will be closed for bridge replacement projects. V.O. Menuez & Sons won a $280,00 bid to replace a bridge on Stone Road and H&H Construction and Excavating won a $63,000 bid to replace two bridges on Wandel Road.

Citizen complaint
Sharon Township resident James Simonelli told county commissioners he was angry that petitions he helped circulate to place a county charter issue on the ballot were ruled invalid by the Medina County Board of Elections.

“Have you ever heard the phrase, ‘We the People?” Simonelli asked commissioners at their weekly meeting. “Well, ‘We the People’ want to he heard, respected and represented by our local government, its agencies and representatives.”

County Commissioner Adam Friedrick told Simonelli that commissioners and Board of Elections members govern according to the rule of law and do what the law dictates regardless of their personal opinions.
