LOUDONVILLE – Mohican Log Homes, Inc. may specialize in designing and building custom structures, but making dreams is at the heart of the Loudonville business’ mission.
A home is a place where dreams come true. If you can dream it, the team at Mohican Log Homes can make it a reality.
The business offers many building options in log and timber frame construction using quality pine, cedar and oak wood species in every imaginable combination. The company will travel within two hours in each direction from its Loudonville headquarters to build that dream home.
Sometimes, understandably, customers can be intimidated by the building process. Mohican Log Homes aims to relieve this stress by taking the process into their own hands, offering full explanations and making the experience smooth and enjoyable from start to finish.
Every client is different and has varying ideas of what their dream home should entail. Many individuals or couples bring in a photo or floor plan they found online.
“Once the customer brings in pictures we kind of know which direction they want to go,” said Lester Hostetler, sales manager at Mohican Log Homes. “The possibilities are endless. There are a lot of choices in terms of materials. We try to get their dream to work within a budget.”
In the initial design meeting, the customer’s ideas are formulated into a cohesive plan. As options are discussed, previous work will give a clear vision of cost and timeframe.
Items a customer should bring to the initial meeting include a list of must-have items to incorporate into that dream should the budget allow. Other things to bring are sketches, graph-paper drawings, inspiration photos and any other documents that will help Mohican Log Homes design the project.
After the initial meeting, the company will create CAD drawings to establish the floor plans, or a customer may find that one of the company’s 16 floor plans suits a client’s needs.
Once plans are approved, a final blueprint is drafted showing the elevations and all aspects of the project. The process ensures that, in the end, each project is as original and unique as the client’s desire.
Once a floor plan is agreed upon, customers meet in the company’s Loudonville showroom to choose all the options for their dream home.
During all phases of the project, Mohican Log Homes gives the customer full attention, answering questions and explaining details so a person or couple walks away with a solid confidence in the final product.
The average timeframe from the time a customer walks in with an idea to floor plans being finalized is approximately six weeks, according to Hostetler.
“When all the decisions are made and fit into the client’s budget, we take that into a contract. The average build time for a house is about six months,” he said.
Log, timber frame and combination homes
Hostetler says Mohican Log Homes has never built the same home twice.
Log homes have been in vogue for some time. The natural look of such a residence never goes out of style. Mohican Log Homes has the flexibility to build different styles with different species of wood. Supply your own plans or the company has a number to choose from, all made with premium-grade materials.
A timber-frame home is a celebration of wood on a massive scale. Tall posts grow from the floor and connect overhead in a soaring network of beams, rafters and braces joined with glove-like precision. And the entire structure — which is designed to last for centuries — remains exposed as evidence of the craftsman’s skill.
Combination homes, which allow for integration of the best elements of conventional, log and timber-frame structures, are some of the most popular.
“The interior of combination homes are usually timber ceilings and conventional drywall,” Hostetler said. “We’ve taken a conventional home and turned it into a timber-frame home.”
Some customers will come back to Mohican Log Homes later for additions to their home.
“If we build a dream home for someone that house generally stays with them. We recently built a farmhouse for a customer who wanted a house that would stay with the family for generations to come,” Hostetler said. “The farm had been in the family for 200 years. He wanted to build something that would never be sold, to be handed down to the children and grandchildren.”
Commercial buildings
Mohican Log Homes builds more than family residences. They can and have constructed barns, a golf course clubhouse, churches, manufacturing facilities, storage buildings, warehouses and more.
“We’re far more than just a log home builder,” Hostetler said. “It’s a different ballgame. Just like we have crews that are specialized in log and timber frame, we have crews that are specialized in commercial building.”
The staff is well versed in handling the requirements of a commercial project, such as state inspections, permits and bonding.
Testimonials
Hostetler shared feedback he has received from customers:
“It has been a pleasure doing business with the entire Mohican Log Homes team. I would not hesitate to recommend you to anyone looking to build a high quality, custom home of any type. We so appreciated not only the craftsmanship of the building, but also the positive attitude of the workers whom we got the opportunity to meet along the way. What a wonderful group of hard-working men, with high standards of workmanship, but also with great senses of humor.” – Dave and Paula F.
“Jayne and I spent years planning our retirement home. Since we had never built a new home before, we found ourselves in uncharted waters. To complicate things, we wanted to build a one-of-a-kind, custom log home. After doing all the research, we were ready to select a builder. We soon found that there weren’t a lot of custom log home builders from which to choose. One of the builders recommended to us was Mohican Log Homes. When we visited the model home and met the design team, we started to feel at ease immediately. The salesman was extremely patient with all of our concerns and questions and never pressured us to buy. He kept assuring us that Mohican Log Homes would guide us through every step of the process, help us with design issues and would react quickly to any last minute changes we might have. In addition, he let us know that they would be there well after the job was done to follow up on any problem or issue we might have after we moved in.” – Rob and Jayne R.
