Prescription costs for seniors has gone through the roof
letter to the editor
To the Editor:
The Jan. 28 guest columnist pointedly outlined all the reasons the ACA, or Affordable Care Act, should be kept intact. The writer cited how it strengthened Medicare, “Primarily by better covering senior’s prescription costs.” News flash, prescription costs under Medicare for many seniors has gone through the roof. For example, a prescription I had for 180 tablets jumped from $12 to $780! I called my insurance company and discovered that right after the ACA was signed into law, the drug had been placed in a new tier, or tier one, allowing a huge increase in its cost. It had been a tier three drug. No explanation was offered by either the insurance company or the drug company for the change. In another case, my wife’s uncle was forced to pay $1,300 per pill for his leukemia treatment. These examples certainly do not reflect positive effects of the ACA.
