Man indicted for involuntary manslaughter in OD death
Carfentanil allegedly given to Litchfield man
MEDINA — An Akron man was charged with involuntary manslaughter and corrupting another with drugs for allegedly providing the drug carfentanil that led to the overdose death of a Litchfield man in May.

Gary Brown, 25, pleaded not guilty Sept. 7 to the counts, which were first and second-degree felony counts respectively, in Medina County Common Pleas Court.

He reportedly supplied the carfentanil that led to the death of William Flynn, 25, of Litchfield, May 14 at his Crow Road residence. Drugs were reportedly found at the scene, according to a report from the Medina County Sheriff’s Office.

Carfentanil, a synthetic opioid, is used to sedate large animals such as elephants but has been seen mixed in heroin batches purchased on the street, according to law enforcement authorities. It is 100 times more powerful than fentanyl, an opioid used in medical settings. The drug can reportedly be absorbed through the skin easily and touching or inhaling it can cause overdoses.

Bond is set at $100,000. and a trial is scheduled for Nov. 13. Earlier this year, Brown was convicted of two counts of felony drug possession in Medina County.

County Prosecutor Forrest Thompson said anyone who supplies a drug that is found to lead to the death of an individual will be prosecuted vigorously.

Prosecutors have started indicting defendants accused of providing drugs that resulted in an OD death.

Locally, Heather Hobbie, of Medina, was sentenced to six years in prison in December after pleading guilty to a count of involuntary manslaughter for her role in the death of a man who overdosed and later died at her Medina residence. She and her codefendant Jacob Aune failed to take the victim to the hospital until after he died.
