Woman accused of abandoning sick cats acquitted
Felines were found in Brunswick parking lot

MEDINA – A Montville Township breeder of Persian cats charged with leaving kittens in a container in front of a Brunswick restaurant last year was acquitted of all counts Dec. 1 after a 2 1/2 day non-jury trial in Medina Municipal Court.

Trixxe McCowin, 42, was charged with misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty, criminal trespass and abandoning animals after an investigation by Brunswick Police and the Medina County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

In the Nov. 13, 2015 incident at a Town Center Boulevard business, Brunswick Police received a call from a man who reporting seeing a woman driving a yellow Hummer stop in the parking lot and drop off a kennel with three kittens inside, who appeared to be in poor health.

One of the cats had to be put down due to its health and a second had to have an eye removed. The cats were all Persians.

Police used the vehicle description to find and cite McCowin about a month later.

Trying the case for the state was Special Prosecutor Jeff Holland, who handles animal-related prosecutions for the SPCA. He said the trial was about being able to prove the person who dropped off the container was actually McCowin.

“The eyewitness was unable to identify her face,” said Holland, citing the man’s trial testimony. “It was a dark parking lot ... he thought he was just seeing someone with their pets, he called police after the vehicle drove away.”

However, he said McCowin admitted to being in that area of Brunswick the exact time the eyewitness called police.

“There were too many coincidences,” Holland said, adding a witness saw a “blinged-out” yellow Hummer drive away from the cat container, the same vehicle she owns.

“We don’t regret bringing the charge,” Holland said.

The case was heard by Municipal Judge Dale Chase.

McCowin is the owner of Pure Royalty Persians, breeding several types of Persian cats, according to her website.
