YORK TOWNSHIP – During a brief Buckeye board meeting July 11, members received updates on building projects and recognized outgoing Treasurer Carolyn Weglewski for her service during her last official meeting.

Superintendent Kent Morgan issued a district-wide email that day informing parents about the updated 2017-18 school calendar, which includes the late arrival days where students will come in two hours late so teachers can participate in professional development sessions. There are seven days scheduled on Wednesdays about once a month.

Morgan said parts of the fencing around the football stadium and in the track/soccer complex will be repaired or replaced within the next few weeks for a total cost of $24,500. He said the fence would be replaced in several areas, including under the stands, and a separate entry gate for EMS vehicles will be constructed so EMTs will not have to drive around spectators during games.

In some places, the bottom part of the fence sticks out, Morgan said, leaving gaps that have allowed animals to go underneath. At the soccer/track complex, some fence posts need to be fixed so the gates align properly.

At the elementary building, the cafeteria lights were replaced with LED lights at a cost of around $3,000, with the work done in-house, Morgan said.

The district is still working to determine how best to fix the drainage issues at the elementary school playgrounds, Morgan said; the mulch surface on both structures will be pulled out to determine what must be done as it is degrading and washing away. Once the source of the problem is determined, he will come back to the board to approve repair work.

Buckeye Youth Football is also constructing a small equipment building at the youth fields behind the school buildings and leaders be a future board meeting to formally donate it back to the school district, Morgan said.

The board also approved the addition of an elective astronomy course for junior high students in addition to purchasing new textbooks for high school honors physics students.

Treasurer’s last meeting
The July 11 meeting was the last regular board meeting for Weglewski, who will be retiring in early August after serving in the post for more than 20 years. Board members thanked her for her service and wished her well.

“The help she has given me over those years learning some of the intricacies of school finance ... I do appreciate it and I hope you have a great retirement,” said Board Member Ken Barco.

“She’s always been our go-to person,” said Board Member Kim Cecelich.

Board President Barb Gunkelman, who previously served as the district’s curriculum director, said Weglewski trained her in managing the federal grants the district receives and said her retirement will “leave a hole in this district.”

After cutting a cake in Weglewski’s honor, the board then went into executive session to discuss personnel; members were still in the process of narrowing down candidates for the treasurer position at that time.
