STRONGSVILLE – Firefighters battled a garage blaze at 16689 Cypress Avenue during the afternoon of Jan. 29, 2017.

Southwest Emergency Dispatch received a 911 call for a structure fire at 2:56 p.m. A fire engine and its crew of three from Fire Station No. 2 arrived at 3:01 p.m. to find the attached garage, with a vehicle inside, on fire.

Sixteen Strongsville firefighters responded to the scene, including Fire Chief Jack Draves. Mutual aid was requested from Brunswick, Middleburg Heights and North Royalton.

An aggressive fire attack was initiated and the fire was knocked down and considered under control at 3:09 p.m. Fire crews conducted a search of the structure to make sure all occupants were accounted for.

The structure was ventilated to remove any smoke and poisonous gases, and an overhaul of the structure was performed to make sure all hidden fire was extinguished.

A male working on a vehicle in the garage at the time of the fire received burns to his hands and was transported to the MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland to be evaluated.

The cause of the fire is undetermined. However, it is possible that gasoline vapors from the vehicle might have been ignited by an unidentified heat source. Damage to the structure and contents is estimated at $55,000.
