WADSWORTH - It has been a bit longer than four years since the Wadsworth YMCA opened its doors to the community.

With 10,000 members currently, the facility seems to be going strong.

"Our traffic pattern has remained steady due to the variety of programs that we offer all day and due to the collaboration between the senior center, high school and Summa Physical Therapy Center," said Maureen Mizerak, director of the Wadsworth YMCA.

Amenities at the YMCA include a fitness center, indoor walking track, field house, cycling room, indoor family recreation pool, eight-lane lap pool and group exercise rooms.

Recently the YMCA has invested in some new equipment including Expresso Bikes - which have an interactive screen - as well as several pieces of ergonomic equipment that are designed for older adults with joint problems. These pieces of equipment work legs, arms and shoulders in a seated position.

"We have a 90-year-old couple that uses these pieces," Mizerak said.

She added that it is the mission of the YMCA to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all. For that reason, the YMCA works to raise money to offer financial assistance for memberships, programs, camps and water safety programs.

Some of the programs the folks at the YMCA are especially proud of include the Diabetes Prevention Program, a Center for Disease Control sanctioned program for those who are pre-diabetic. Funding is available for this program which can help to prevent the onset of diabetes.

Another program that Mizerak describes as powerful is the Lose4U program that is a small group weight loss program designed to help participants to eat healthy, lose weight and work out with a personal trainer.

In 2016 the Wadsworth YMCA offered a free water safety program for the kindergarteners who attended the Wadsworth Safety Town program. In 2017 the YMCA will offer a free water safety program for third-graders at two Wadsworth elementary schools.

The YMCA is part of the Wadsworth Community Center, which was constructed by the city using bond funds and capital campaign contributions. After construction the YMCA assumed all of its own operational costs.
