One injured in early-evening Aug. 23 crash
Driver reportedly thought intersection was a four-way stop
SHARON – An early evening crash Aug. 23 at the intersection of State and Sharon-Copley roads sent one person to the hospital and significantly damaged both vehicles.

According to Sgt. Todd Heckel of the Medina County Sheriff’s Office, at 5:45 p.m. Keerie Shastop, 22, of Wadsworth, was northbound on State Road in a 2011 Honda Civic. She stopped at the stop sign, and believing the intersection was a four-way stop, pulled onto Sharon-Copley Road into the path of an eastbound 2011 Chevrolet, driven by Alexander Scheufler, 22, of Sharon Township. Her car was hit broadside on the driver’s side by the Scheufler vehicle. Air bags in both vehicles deployed.

Shastop, who suffered non-life threatening head injuries, was transported to Medina Hospital by Sharon Fire and Rescue. Scheufler reportedly had no injuries.

Heckel said, “The fact there were no injuries to the one driver and only minor injuries to the other was most likely because both drivers were wearing seat belts.”

He said that relying on air bags alone in not enough to prevent injuries in a crash.

“Seat belts and air bags are made to be used in conjunction,” he explained.

Shastop was cited for failure to stop at a stop sign.
