BRUNSWICK HILLS – Police continue to look for a second vehicle that may have been involved in an early-morning accident on Grafton Road that sent two people to the hospital Aug. 5.
According to Ohio Highway Patrol reports, a vehicle traveling west on Grafton Road was passing a bicyclist while a car was approaching from the opposite direction.
The report indicated the car traveling east went off the south side of the road to avoid crashing into the passing vehicle. The driver of the vehicle then “over-corrected” and went off the north side of the road, striking the cyclist.
The car struck a pole and flipped over before coming to a rest, the report indicated.
The cyclist was flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland for treatment and the driver of the vehicle was taken to Southwest General Hospital in Middleburg Heights for treatment.
The names of the victims involved have yet to be released.
Police said earlier this week that the crash remains under investigation and that investigators continue to pursue details about a second vehicle, described as a black sedan, that was possibly involved.
Township police said the cyclist was riding in the roadway as part of the Bike MS: Buckeye Breakaway fundraiser to benefit Multiple Sclerosis.
Approximately 1,450 cyclists were expected to participate in the event, which kicked off at Brunswick High School at 6 a.m. The goal of the event was to raise $881,500 to help people suffering from multiple sclerosis.
After leaving Brunswick, riders had the option of traveling 30, 62, 75, or 100 miles.
Riders continuing on the two-day journey spent the night at Ashland University, where they were provided dinner, activities and an overnight party with live music in Team Village. Riders finished back in Brunswick on Sunday after a 75-mile ride.
Organizers added a metric century 62 mile option on Saturday for those who wanted the experience of starting in Brunswick and finishing in Ashland, but preferred a shorter option.
The majority of riders returned to Brunswick High School the afternoon of Aug. 6.
Members of the Brunswick Hills Fire Department cautioned motorists on Facebook following the crash. The post received more than 60,000 views by Aug. 7 and spurred debate over the safety of cyclists traveling on local roadways.
“With the good weather now here, there are many bicycles, motorcycles, and joggers out sharing the road,” said Brunswick Hills Fire Lt. Rich Dalziel. “Please use caution, slow down, be patient. Let’s all get home safe.”
