MEDINA – The bicycle route ending at South Broadway Street will eventually receive an extension a bit further throughout the south side of town.

Medina City Council approved the request in finance committee March 27.

Over a mile and a half will be added to the Champion Creek Multipurpose Trail in what is being called the Medina Champion Creek Bicycle Route, starting from the Sophia Victoria Trailhead on South Broadway near Spokes Cafe. The multipurpose trail currently stretches from that point east, through Roscoe Ewing Park, to Southport Drive in Ward 3.

An 8-foot-wide concrete, shared-use pathway will be installed from the trailhead along South Broadway to East Smith Road, and along East Smith Road from South Broadway to South Court Street. About a mile of 5-foot-wide bike lanes will be marked off within the existing roadway of South Court Street from Lafayette Road south to Sturbridge Drive. The path will then loop back, but head east on Grant Street and north on South Broadway back to the trailhead.

The project will also include trees, decorative lights and stamped concrete crosswalks, as well as bio-retention cells along the East Smith section to help with storm water drainage.

β€œIt’s really not time-consuming work, about 45 to 60 days depending on the time of year,” City Engineer Pat Patton said.

The city received a federal grant for the $545,000 project and will only have to spend about $130,000. The path installation will go out for a bidding process before work can begin, Patton said.

Patton said the project will overlap with, but is unrelated to, the previously-approved replacement of East Smith between South Court and South Jefferson streets later this year. Utility lines and storm sewers in the affected area will also be replaced.
