As summer wanes and the brown and orange hues of fall begin to creep back into our lives, it’s a welcome reminder that the time has come again to sit back, crack open a few domestics and watch my favorite team all the way to the Super Bowl.

OK, OK. Baby steps. Let’s start simply by beating last year’s record by notching a couple of wins this season.

Even more exciting, with the return of the professional football season comes the return of The Post’s Goal Post Pro Football Challenge, now in its fifth season! Every year around the first of August football fans across our circulation start asking if we plan to bring back our popular pick ‘em game, and the answer is a resounding yes.

This year we are starting things off right by awarding everyone who signs up a certificate for five free chicken wings courtesy of On Tap Grille & Bar (Medina and Montrose locations). The certificate will be sent straight to your inbox immediately after registering, so if you don’t see it be sure to check your spam folder, and add the email address to your address book!

Every week The Post will award winners across our circulation area with some pretty cool prizes, including gift cards to great local restaurants like The Galaxy in Wadsworth, Cleats in Strongsville and Corkscrew Saloon in Medina, so you always have an opportunity to win even if you have a few bad weeks. We’re giving away prizes every week to winners in all nine of our Post editions, plus a weekly grand prize to the best player in our circulation area, giving you multiple chances to win every week even when you haven’t done so well in the past!

If you beat the odds and are named grand champion at the end of the season, you can go home with a 55-inch LED 4K television from our friends at Bicksler Appliance and TV Center in Wadsworth.

There are also the national grand prizes – the weekly prize of an NFL-themed Fathead of the winner’s choice, and the national grand prize, a trip for two to Hawaii. This one is tough to win, but let’s hope luck will favor Post readers this season.

If you’ve never played the Goal Post Football Challenge, this is the year to see what all the hype is about. Not only is it free, fast and easy to sign up at thepostnewspapers.com/goal, but it doesn’t take a football enthusiast to win something fun! Whether you’re an armchair quarterback or someone who’s only interested in the uniforms, all you have to do is predict which teams will win from week to week better than your neighbors.

I look forward to our pick ‘em tournament every year, but if you’re a fantasy football fanatic like me, you might enjoy a bit more strategy to your game.

Once again we’re bringing back our Survivor challenge in conjunction with the pick ‘em-style game, giving you a different style of play and more opportunities to win great prizes. Each week you will be asked to pick just one team you think is most likely to win its game that week. If that team wins, you advance to the next week but can never pick that team again going forward. You have one opportunity to mess up, but after that it’s game over (although you can still continue to play for fun). Reign supreme in this Survivor contest and you will be presented with a Browns prize package assembled by The Post worth $225.

It’s important to note in order to be eligible for the Survivor contest, you must sign up at least 15 minutes prior to kickoff during the first Monday night game Sept. 11. National prizes are also awarded to Survivor players – a $500 Amazon gift card for first place, and a $200 Amazon gift card for the winner of the second-chance pool.

No matter how you join in on the fun, my favorite part of the contest is playing against my friends and VIPs, like local football coaches and well-known sports personalities. In addition to trying to beat Post staffers like myself, Post Founder Bruce Trogdon and Post Publisher Mike Trogdon, this is your chance to take down Goal Post regulars like sports personality Bruce Drennan and Charlie the Chorkie Wilson (some weeks I swear that dog knows more about the game than any of us do).

Although you can sign up to play at any time during the season, I recommend playing from the beginning for your best chance to win the grand prize. The regular season starts Thursday, Sept. 7, so sign up soon at thepostnewspapers.com/goal so you don’t forget! For a full list of rules and the nitty-gritty details about how to play, see page 4.
