WADSWORTH – In order to prepare for the repaving of Broad Street in 2018, city officials are planning for a water line replacement on a portion of the road this year.

Service Director Robert Patrick announced at a recent public service committee meeting that the city plans to complete the engineering for a water line replacement starting on Broad Street in the area of Sacred Heart all the way to the intersection of Pardee Street and College Street. Patrick said water line replacements recently took place on College Street from Pardee Street west, but the area of College Street close to downtown still needs to be replaced.

While the city will hold off on the actual construction of the water line replacement from Lyman to Pardee, Patrick said construction of the water line replacement from Lyman to the area of Sacred Heart will take place this year. An exact timeline has not yet been specified.

“The water line east of Sacred Heart had been replaced about 10 years ago,” Patrick said. “But we want to get to the water line from there to Lyman this year in anticipation of the paving of Broad Street in 2018.”

Patrick said city officials have chosen to complete the engineering for the water line replacement all the way to Pardee so the city is ready to start construction on that portion when the time is right.

“Before we enter into other plans to make improvements in the downtown, we want to make sure the infrastructure is taken care of,” Patrick said.

Councilor Ralph Copley asked if any of the water lines in the downtown area were replaced in the early 1980s when the city constructed a downtown streetscape.

“No the water lines are fairly old in that area,” City Engineer Tom Tucker said.

Patrick said there are also plans this year to complete the engineering for the replacement of problematic water lines on Longview Avenue and Valley View Avenue.

“That way we will be able to get to construction in that area next year or the year after,” Patrick said.

Patrick also added that the engineering on the replacement of small diameter lines on Sunset, Stevenson and Waverly avenues as well as Stover Court were completed last year so the city is ready to go on construction in those areas this year.
