MEDINA – Ridership on Medina County Public Transit buses was down slightly in July according to a monthly report issued by Transit Director Mike Salamone Aug. 15.

Salamone told Medina County commissioners that MCPT ridership was 5,513 in July. That was down from 6,193 riders in June, the most riders reported in any month this year.

Ridership consisted of 330 clients who scheduled 2,810 trips on the transit department’s on-demand service in July. Another 2,703 riders stepped on to a bus traveling one of the fixed routes in Brunswick, Medina and Wadsworth.

Salamone also reported that MCPT denied 59 requests for on-demand service in July because of scheduling limits. Another 99 scheduled trips did not take place because the passenger who scheduled the ride did not appear.

Salamone said the average cost for MCPT to transport one passenger in July was $20.23.

Sewer inspections
County Administrator Scott Miller said a new system designed to simplify the process contractors use to acquire permits and schedule inspections is expected to go online in September.

The system designed by the staff of the Medina County Sanitary Engineer will allow contractors installing water and sewer service to schedule inspections online in much the same way some inspections are scheduled by the Medina County Building Department.

Jeremy Sinko, director of engineering at the Sanitary Engineering Department, said his office gets 10-20 calls a day to schedule inspections on new projects. Some of those calls cannot be answered immediately because staff is on another call or busy with another customer.

The new system will avoid the delays in the scheduling process by allowing a contractor to get a registration number and project number that allows him to follow the permitting process online and schedule inspections without speaking to someone personally.

Septic system repairs
County commissioners authorized Sanitary Engineer Amy Lyon-Galvin to apply for grant money to repair or replace failing septic systems in homes around the county.

The grant money is made available from the Ohio EPA Water Pollution Control Fund and in past years has allowed the Medina County Health Department and sanitary engineer to help 15-20 low income homeowners upgrade their septic systems.

Appointees
County commissioners approved the reappointment of Elaine Orlandi to a four-year term on the Medina County Board of Developmental Disabilities.

Raymond Denson was also reappointed to serve as a delegate-at-large to the Medina County Advisory Council on Aging. His new term expires Sept. 30, 2020.

In addition, commissioners reappointed Gail Houk and Todd Gerber to four-year terms on the Medina County Public Defenders Commission.

Annexation
County commissioners approved the annexation of 2.2 acres of land from Guilford Township to the village of Seville. The land is located just north of West Main Street and east of the border with Westfield Township.

The Expedited Type 2 annexation petition was agreed to by elected officials in both the township and village.

Gasoline purchase
Great Lakes Petroleum of Cleveland won a bid to sell the Medina County Engineering Center 7,200 gallons or regular unleaded gasoline for $1.60 per gallon. Four other wholesalers submitted bids for the sale with prices which ranged from $1.62 to $1.69 per gallon.

Personnel expenses
County commissioners authorized the expenses for several county employees to attend a series of out-of-town meetings and training seminars. Among those expenses were $2,000 for two workers in the Adult Probation Department to attend a two-day conference in Columbus, $1,750 for a one-year membership for a Maintenance Department employee in the Associated Builders & Contractors Northern Ohio Chapter, $475 for two staffers in the Building Department to attend a three-day conference in Columbus and $430 for a member of the county auditor’s staff to attend a two-day conference on digital government in Columbus.
