MEDINA – The Hinckley man accused of telling a police dispatcher he killed his brother and sister in their shared residence pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated murder Feb. 13.
Dean Simms, 43, used a shotgun to shoot sister Cynthia Gesaman, 52, and brother Randy Szychowicz, 45, in the head during a domestic incident in the early morning hours of Feb. 5, 2016, killing both.
In exchange for his guilty plea to two counts of aggravated murder, four counts of murder were dropped. An aggravated murder means Simms used “prior calculation and design” before killing his siblings.
Before formally changing his pleas, Common Pleas Judge Christopher Collier told Simms he will receive a life sentence; he will either get no chance for parole or parole eligibility after 20, 25 or 30 years.
In addition, Simms will receive an additional six years on top of that due to using a firearm in the murders.
Simms will be sentenced April 3, giving the court time to perform a pre-sentence investigation for Collier.
After killing his siblings, Simms called 911 and told a Brunswick Police dispatcher he used a shotgun to kill them and added their “heads were gone.”
Simms was told to stay on the phone while he put on pants and shoes and the dispatcher wanted him to go outside to meet the officers. Simms then told the dispatcher that he called a friend of his before calling police to tell what he had done.
Simms was arrested at their Babcock Road residence by police a short time later.
Hinckley Township Police later revealed they had been at the residence earlier that evening to respond to a domestic complaint.
