MEDINA – An Avon Lake woman pleaded no contest for causing the Dec. 27, 2015 death of a Pennsylvania man in a multi-vehicle car crash on Interstate 71 in Montville Township while intoxicated.
Erin Jones, 45, changed her plea March 27 on two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide, second- and third-degree felonies, aggravated vehicular assault, a third-degree felony and vehicular assault, a fourth-degree felony.
She will be sentenced May 4 by Common Pleas Judge Joyce Kimbler.
A tan 2009 Chevy Malibu being operated by Jones was traveling north in the right lane on northbound I-71 near milepost 216 around 3:30 a.m. Jones’ vehicle struck a northbound 2011 Ford Fusion being operated by James Sexton, 75, of Edinboro, Pa. Sexton’s vehicle lost control and traveled off the right side of the roadway striking a guardrail.
Two other northbound drivers also hit Sexton’s vehicle. Sexton was pronounced dead at the scene, while a 5-year-old passenger was taken to Akron Children’s Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The other drivers involved in this crash received minor injuries and were treated and released at the scene. I-71 was closed for approximately three hours as a result of the crash.
