Shewbridge named Medina Hospital president

MEDINA – The Cleveland Clinic named Dr. Richard Shewbridge, of Medina, the new president of Medina Hospital as of July 17.
Dr. Shewbridge has served as vice president of medical operations at Medina Hospital since 2011. An endocrinologist, Dr. Shewbridge has been affiliated with Medina since 1996 and affiliated with the Cleveland Clinic since 2010.
“This (appointment) will allow me to lead a wide range of caregivers ... I’m excited to continue improving the care of patients here. I’m excited to get to work with the team I have.” he said in a July 12 interview.
Dr. Shewbridge said he was welcomed by the community when he came to Medina in 1996, adding he was the first endocrinologist to have a practice in the city and continues to be supported by his patients. He will continue to see some patients as hospital president.
Currently, Dr. Shewbridge said the hospital is in the middle of two construction projects, which include the renovations of both the 12-bed intensive care unit and the emergency room.
He said the ICU project will be done in the next month or two, and the ER work should be completed within 3-4 months. After work is completed, patients in both the ICU and ER will be housed in their own individual rooms.
Dr. Shewbridge replaces Dr. Thomas Tulisiak, who stepped down as hospital president May 1 to return to his family medicine practice. This occurred about a month after the Cleveland Clinic announced the closing of the birthing unit at Medina Hospital.
Dr. Shewbridge is active in the Medina community with Healthy Strides and Healthy Medina, a community-wide health initiative created in partnership with the city of Medina. He was also involved in the Medina County Medical Society and the Medina City Schools Foundation Board.
Medina Mayor Dennis Hanwell said Dr. Shewbridge is an “excellent selection” for hospital president.
“I am very thankful for the selection of Dr. Shewbridge and look forward to working with him collaboratively on issues to benefit the city, hospital and our residents,” Hanwell said.
A graduate of Michigan State University, Dr. Shewbridge received his medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine. He completed an internship and residency training in internal medicine at the United States Air Force Medical Center, Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Miss.
He completed a fellowship in endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism at USAF Medical Center Wilford Hall at the Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. Dr. Shewbridge served in the United States Air Force Medical Corps from 1988-96. He has been an Assistant Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University in Rootstown, Ohio, since 1998.
On a national level, Dr. Shewbridge is a member of the steering committee of the National Diabetes and Obesity Research Institute at Tradition in Biloxi, Miss., an affiliation with the Cleveland Clinic Endocrinology and Metabolism Institute.
Vicky Snyder, who served as interim president at Medina Hospital for the last few months, will return to her role as the hospital’s chief operating officer.
Dr. Shewbridge and his wife, Sally, have lived in Medina since 1996. They have three adult children.
