With 10 returning seniors to lead the way, Medina Hockey Club expectations were high going into the new season this past weekend; and the seniors delivered on those expectations. Saturday night in Strongsville, Medina faced off against Team Audi of Mentor. After dropping both games to Mentor last season, Medina relished in an 8-0 victory in front of their home crowd.
Senior Josh Gower opened the scoring just two minutes into the period with an assist from Senior Jonathan Korpusik. Five minutes after Gower opened the scoring, Medina scored two goals within 22 seconds. Senior Ben Schroth scored with an assist from senior Callum Parnell and senior Patrick McGinty followed Schroth’s goal with an unassisted one of his own.
The second period would have Medina score power play goals early and late in the period. The first goal came from Parnell with an assist from senior Ryan Cole, and Cole scored the late goal unassisted. Medina finished with three goals in the third period. Senior Cooper Schmit scored the final goal with an assist from junior Daniel Dzhubinskiy.
Sunday, Medina caravaned to Erie, Pa. to face the much improved Lake Erie Tigers. While Medina came away with a 6-0 victory, it was a much more challenging game than was expected.
Cole led the way with one goal in each of the first two periods, but Medina was only leading 2-0 at the start of the third period before sophomore Matthew Jay scored an unassisted goal. Four minutes later Parnell scored a short-handed goal and four minutes after that McGinty scored his own short-handed goal with an assist from Korpusik. With less than a minute left in the game, senior Andrew Rini notched an unassisted goal to close out the scoring. Senior goaltender Blake Forystek faced only 19 shots on the weekend, but he stopped them all to earn two shut-outs in the young season.
