Fatal stabbing occurs at Sprague Road home

STRONGSVILLE – Strongsville Police detectives apprehended two people that had been charged with murder for the fatal stabbing of 50-year-old Dean Vastartis inside a home in the 13500 block of Sprague Road.
Timothy Bene, 32, and Courtney Heckman, 23, were taken into custody without incident around 2:15 p.m. on Feb. 7 in Ashland County. They were transported to the Ashland Police Department where they waived their extradition hearing and were transported to the city of Strongsville.
Officers responded to a call of domestic violence at the Sprague Road home around 12:50 p.m. on Feb. 3.
When police arrived, they found Vastartis, Bene’s stepfather, with several stab wounds. He was taken to Southwest General Hospital, where he died, according to a statement by the Strongsville Police Department.
Bond was set at $1 million for Bene and Heckman in Berea Municipal Court on Feb. 8.
Bene is scheduled for his preliminary hearing at 1 p.m. Feb. 17 in Berea Municipal Court. Heckman waived her preliminary hearing and is scheduled for a hearing at 9:45 a.m. in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court.
