The DuPage Monarch Project and the River Prairie Group of the Illinois Sierra Club will present “Bicycling With Butterflies,” a free virtual program with author, adventurist and conservationist Sara Dykman.

The number of monarch butterflies has been plummeting from loss of habitat, exposure to pesticides, and changing weather patterns.

“Most animals cannot fight back with drama,” wrote Dykman. “All they can do is leave us with heartbreaking silence. I heard the silence.”

She acted on that silence by making a 10,000-mile solo bike ride following the monarch’s migration from Mexico to Canada and back to the El Rosario Monarch Sanctuary in Mexico where she began.

Along the way, Dykman made presentations to students, church groups and garden clubs, anyone willing to listen. Her story is the tale of an adventure fueled by a passion for protecting monarchs and all threatened species.

It is a call for all of us to share our lives and lands with the pollinators that are essential for human health and well-being.

At 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, Dykman will share her story of bicycling with the butterflies, continuing the work of bringing people together to save monarchs.

“Together, many monarchs render a migration. Together, many miles create an adventure. Together, many gardens produce a solution. Our collective voices add up to change.”
