A 24-year-old teacher has been hacked to death by her husband in a suspected family feud at Mononwet village in Bomet East.
Jesca Chelangat, who until her death was a teacher at Davsi Academy in Kiromwok Location, was attacked by her 27-year-old husband after a dispute at their home in the wee hours of Monday night.
Police reports state that the suspect who has since been arrested and locked up at Longisa Police Station in Bomet, difered with his wife before attacking her with a machete.
Bomet East Sub-County Police Commander Michael Singa said the suspect told police after his arrest that the victim was threatening to leave him for another man.
“The suspect has claimed his wife was threatening to leave him for another man over frequent quarrels, which irked him because he paid her college fees,” said Singa.
Singa added that the suspect was being processed and will be arraigned in court on Wednesday to take a plea.
“Since now we have him we are processing him and Detectives from DCI are working with DPP oicers to prefer charges of murder to him for killing his wife. Already we have recovered the murder weapon and other crucial evidence which we will present before court,” said the Sub- County police commander.
The suspect was arrested after nearly eight-hour man-hunt. He was arrested at a hideout at Kiromwok Trading Centre after a tip of from members of the public.
Singa said attempts by the public to arrest him at the scene last night became futile after he cheated them that he was going to present himself before police and run into hiding.
“Members of the public who arrived at the scene wanted to arrested him but feared he could be lynched and he requested to be release to present himself at police but went into hiding prompting a man hunt,” added Singa. Singa decried the incident and asked members of the public to shun taking laws into their own hands and tried dialoguing.
“I want to appeal to members of the community in Bomet to avoid such acts of resorting to murder during disputes and embrace dialogue. It is better to talk and resolve issues amicably rather than resorting to taking lives,” Singa passionately pleaded.
Such incidents are on the rise in Bomet County raising alarm over Gender Based Violence cases with 6 cases this year being reported.
