VERONICA Malani, who has lodged a complaint with police over the alleged involvement of Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed- Khaiyum in a 1987 bombing incident, yesterday hand-delivered letters to the Office of Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and the Acting Police Commissioner’s office.
In the letter, Mrs Malani called on Mr Sayed-Khaiyum to step down from his ministerial portfolios.
Mrs Malani’s husband, Manoa Malani, claimed there was a lack of neutrality in the investigation process.
“We had to go ourselves to police to follow up on the case because we have been getting updates from the media and not from them,” he said.
Mr Malani said police were supposed to be there to protect citizens’ constitutional rights.
“They have to make sure that their constitutional roles and duties are correctly applied to citizens,” he said.
“They need to have a clear demarcation of a political role and a constitutional role in this situation.”
When asked for confirmation on the contents of the letter and whether it had been delivered to Acting Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu, police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said “Our investigations are ongoing and (we) reiterate the Acting Commissioner’s comments regarding the process of investigations.”
Ms Naisoro was referring to police comments on Monday that Mr Sayed-Khaiyum had given a statement to the Criminal Investigations Department and investigators were compiling the investigation file before it was sent back to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
“The statements are in relation to the initial report regarding the 1987 bombing case,” she said.
