I AM writing in response to the leader column of 28 July headed: ‘Climate impact is growing’, which claims supportfor the Carbon Neutral Roadmap, to encourage behavioural change in Jersey, developed by the government.

The leader is overlooking many thingsthat need to be addressed in full and scientifically.

It says human activity has caused warming since 1850 and this is false. Global warming cycles come about every 230 years and we have had six during the past 1,100 years and about 40 during the past 7,000 years. We are now at the end of the sixth cycle since 1100AD. We are supposed to be this warm at this point in the cycle – this is natural.

Also, it is not true that it is the warmest period in 120,000 years. It was much warmer 6,000 years ago and even 1,000 years ago. And July is not the hottest on record around the world. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration now includes ocean temperatures in their readings – this has only been done since 1978.

The problem is that the Pacific and Atlantic oceans are currently in a natural recurring warm cycle and this has skewed NOAA’s temperature data.

Eliminate the ocean temperatures from their data and July would not be the hottest on record.

Many land areas around the world have had a cool July (citing Global Weather Cycles globalweathercycles.com) and this is the case for Jersey also.

In case you are interested in the science all this information is available online for everyone to read.
