Bruce Wood’s highly personal dances deserve a wider audience outside of Texas. That goal of touring has been pursued by the late choreographer’s Dallas company since the hiring of Austin booking agent KMP Artists two-plus years ago.

Now it will begin to be realized when Bruce Wood Dance performs in January at New York’s Joyce Theater, one of the most important dance venues in the country. “It was Bruce’s dream to perform at the Joyce. It’s every dancer’s dream,” says company president Gayle Halperin, who worked as a dancer in New York in the 1970s. Bruce Wood Dance is one of only four regional groups invited to the Joyce’s American Dance Platform, an opportunity for national and international dance presenters to see Wood’s work. They will be in town at the same time attending showcases as part of their annual meeting.

On Jan. 8 and 12, the company will perform Wood’s 2012 all-male masterpiece I’m My Brother’s Keeper, which includes dancers ages 21 to 70, and Katarzyna Skarpetowska’s Yesod.
