In a showdown between the second-ranked Whitman-Hanson and third-ranked Hingham girls’ soccer teams on Saturday morning, Caroline Harkins was the difference.
The junior forward connected for her second goal of the game at the 77th minute to lift host Hingham (12-0-1, 10-0-1 Patriot League) to a 2-1 victory, handing the Panthers (11-1-1) their first loss of the season.
“Huge crowd. The girls really feed off the energy,’’ said Hingham coach Ryan Puntiri.
Whitman-Hanson struck first in the 30th minute. Two minutes later, Harkins knotted the game with her 18th of the season.
“Our first goal came off a cross from Kira Maguire,’’ said Puntiri. “We had good possession, she knocked it in . . . it was just a great cross, perfectly timed, great service.’’
In the second half, Harkins converted a through ball from senior Eve Hewins.
“It was just a great effort,’’ said Puntiri. “[Harkins] took a defender one-on-one in the box and beat the goalie back post.’’
Even with a lead in the game’s final few minutes, Puntiri’s focus was making sure his team finished strong, as they have all season.
“I was just looking at the clock to see much time we had left,’’ he said. “My immediate thought was ‘the game is not over.’ ’’
Following the game, Puntiri’s message to his team: “Great win, enjoy the weekend, back to work on Monday.’’
