MAGICAL FAIRY HOUSE FESTIVAL

Enchantment awaits children of all ages at the Nature Museum at Grafton’s 8th annual Fairy House Festival in Vermont (Sept. 24-25). The weekend-long event is designed to spark creativity while experiencing the wonders found in the great outdoors. Visitors can stroll a nature path with charming miniature dwellings — made by volunteer “fairy architects’’ — where knotholes in trees become front doors, seashells are tiny fairy bathtubs, and twigs are woven into ladders. There also will be hands-on opportunities to make your own fairy houses, as well as other crafts, face painting, bubbles, and light refreshments. Picnicking and fantasy costumes are encouraged. Tickets $4-$12; ages 2 and under free. 802-843-2111, www.nature-museum.org

9/11 EXHIBITION DEBUTS IN NYC

Commemorating the 15th anniversary of 9/11, The National September 11 Memorial & Museum opens its first major special exhibition, number one in a series designed to explore topics related to the ever-evolving history of the terror attack and its aftermath. “Rendering the Unthinkable: Artists Respond to 9/11’’ features media ranging from paintings and sculpture to works on paper and video created by 13 New York City-based artists deeply affected by the events. One artist lost his brother, a firefighter, in the terror strikes, some lost friends, and many personally witnessed the horror. Not intended as an encyclopedic survey, the exhibit instead showcases the responses of a small group of individuals who rely on art as a way to understand an incomprehensible act. Opens Sept. 12. General admission $15-$24. 212-312-8800, www.911memorial.org
