The Chess.com Isle of Man International Chess tournament has ended with a victory for the world champion, Magnus Carlsen. Just a half a point behind in second and third were Vishy Anand of India and Hikaru Nakamura of the United States. The next highest scoring American was Fabiano Caruana, who finished in fifth place with 6/9. It could have been better, but a poor loss to Carlsen in the eighth round sealed his fate.
Other Americans of note included 65-year-old Jim Tarjan, just back to chess after a 30-year absence, who was the talk of the event with his big win over Vladimir Kramnik and his 2631 performance rating. Californian and BYU student Michael Brown managed his first GM norm, and Alexander Lenderman continued his quality play from the World Cup with an undefeated 6/9 score. Massachusetts players Eugene Perelshteyn (57th) and Marc Esserman (116th) had poor events, but Perelshteyn had the distinct honor of having the world champion on the ropes in their second-round game. Not too many players can even say they’ve played Carlsen, let alone nearly beaten him.
Another point of interest was the poor performance of former world champion Kramnik. He lost in the first round to Caruana and to Tarjan in the third and then drew the much lower rated Englishman Lawrence Trent in the fifth. This put his qualifying for the forthcoming Berlin Candidate’s tournament in question as his rating took a big hit. To his credit, he bounced back to finish fourth. Former women’s world champion Hou Yifan finished 17th, winning the best woman’s prize.
