March 15, 1980: US Representative John Anderson demands a recount in the New Hampshire presidential primary, hoping to win at least some local delegates to the party’s national convention, but he ends up in worse shape than he started. Ronald Reagan (the winner) picks up 167 votes, but Anderson — as well as George H.W. Bush, Howard Baker, Robert Dole, and several others — loses votes. Anderson’s tally shrinks from 14,483 to 14,458.
