Madoff 8 p.m., ABC

Alas, you can no longer name your dog Bernie. If you do, it will automatically mean one thing (taxing the billionaire class) or quite another (the billionaire class). This two-part miniseries is about the Bernie who was part of the billionaire class, who put the Wall Street in Occupy Wall Street, until he wound up in jail for his Ponzi scheme. His victims felt the Bern, indeed, as they got quite burned by his narcissistic and greedy moves. His story was done and done again by the news media as it unfolded in 2008-09, but here’s the first scripted ripped-from-the-headlines version (HBO has one on the way, too, with Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer). And it’s not entirely awful, thanks to Richard Dreyfuss’s interesting performance as the titular villain. He doesn’t try to show us Madoff’s soft side, nor does he make him into an obvious monster. He gives us a Madoff who charmed his clients into giving him their money, conning them into feeling as though he was bringing them into an exclusive club. He was a snake with a smile. The miniseries is bloated, and the rest of the cast, including Blythe Danner and Peter Scolari, don’t have much to do. But Dreyfuss brings distinction.
