Freshmen propel Terriers’ rout

Boston University’s star-studded freshman class combined for four goals and four assists Friday night in a 7-0 thrashing of Sacred­ Heart at Agganis Arena.

Kieffer Bellows, Clayton Keller, and Dante Fabbro — each a first-round NHL draft pick last June — had a goal apiece, and Chad Krys (a second-round selection) also scored. Freshman goalie Jake Oettinger posted 23 saves for his first shutout.

The eighth-ranked Terriers (2-2-0), who broke a two-game losing streak, host No. 4 Quinnipiac on Saturday. Sacred Heart fell to 1-3-1.

BC 4, Colorado College 1 — Colin White started and ended the scoring for the 10th-ranked Eagles (3-2-0) at Conte Forum.

After BC allowed an early goal, White squared the account at 6:36 of the first period with the Eagles up a man. That was the first of four unanswered strikes by the hosts, followed by Casey Fitzgerald’s, on the power play, at 18:20 of the first. Jesper Mattila (5:00) and White (12:51) connected in the middle frame. White also finished with an assist.

BC’s Ryan Edquist made 10 of his 23 saves in the third. The Tigers (1-4-0) changed goalies after two periods.

UMass Lowell 5, St. Lawrence 2 — A pair of shorthanded goals in the second period, by John Edwardh and Joe Gambardella, were key to a home win for the fifth-ranked River­ Hawks (3-0-2).

Ryan Dmowski and Tyler Mueller got Lowell off to a fast start before the No. 12 Saints (3-2-0) pulled even before the end of one.

Northeastern 5, Arizona State 2 — The No. 17 Huskies (2-1-2) dropped four first-period goals on the visiting Sun Devils (1-4-0) in the programs’ first meeting.

Adam Gaudette had a goal and two assists in the big opening stanza.

Providence 3, Clarkson 3 — Josh Wilkins’s power-play goal at 16:14 of the third pulled the No. 15 Friars (1-2-1) into a tie with the Golden Knights (2-2-1) at Schneider Arena.

UMass 3, Army 2 — Ryan Wischow made 22 of his 23 saves over the final two periods, helping the Minutemen (2-1-0) hold off the Black Knights (2-1-1) at Mullins Center.

Merrimack 4, Colgate 3 — Ludvig Larsson’s strike at 10:01 of the third was the difference for the Warriors (1-3-0) in North Andover.

Women’s hockey

BC 0, Quinnipiac 0 — The third-ranked Bobcats (5-1-1) and No. 6 Eagles (3-2-2) skated to a scoreless tie at Conte Forum.

BC’s Katie Burt stopped 23 shots, and Sydney Rossman made 38 saves for Quinnipiac.

Northeastern 3, Dartmouth 0 — The Huskies (5-2-1) spoiled the Big Green’s season opener by posting the shutout in Hanover, N.H. Brittany Buglaski made 19 saves in the win.

Football

Penn 42, Yale 7 — Alex Torgersen threw four touchdown passes, three to Justin Watson, and the Quakers rolled over the Bulldogs in the first night game in Yale Bowl history.

Torgersen completed 16 of 23 passes for 229 yards and also rushed for 66 yards. Watson had 10 receptions for 166 yards with touchdowns covering 5, 41, and 35 yards for the Quakers (4-2, 3-0 Ivy League).

Penn’s Tre Solomon rushed for 120 yards, 7 shy of the career high he set a week earlier, on 15 carries, including a 3-yard touchdown. Cameron Countryman had a 10-yard touchdown reception and Karekin Brooks had a 13-yard run for his first career touchdown.

Penn, which led, 35-0 at halftime, finished with 508 total yards and held the Bulldogs (1-5, 1-2) to 229. Yale didn’t get on the board until Tre Moore threw a 5-yard scoring pass to Alan Lamar late in the third quarter.

Brett Rypien threw for 442 yards and three touchdowns and No. 14 Boise State overcame five turnovers to hold off visiting BYU, 28-27, Thursday night. The Broncos (7-0) needed a late blocked field goal and a deflected Hail Mary at the finish to preserve the win.
