Indians win 11th straight
Associated Press

Carlos Santana hit a tie-breaking single in Cleveland’s three-run ninth inning, Corey Kluber allowed only three hits in eight innings and the Indians beat the host Atlanta Braves, 5-3, on Tuesday night for their 11th straight win.

The winning streak is Cleveland’s longest in 34 years.

Arodys Vizcaino (1-3) walked Tyler Naquin to open the ninth and then walked Juan Uribe on four pitches. With pinch-runner Rajai Davis at first base, pinch-hitter Michael Martinez struck out.

Vizcaino was in danger of issuing another walk when Santana lined a 3-1 pitch to right field, driving in Naquin from second base.

Braves shortstop Erick Aybar mishandled Francisco Lindor’s grounder for an error, allowing Davis to score. Jose Ramirez added a run-scoring single up the middle.

Kluber (8-7) didn’t allow a hit through five innings.

The righthander allowed two runs on three hits and one walk with seven strikeouts.

Rangers 7, Yankees 1 — Cole Hamels breezed through seven shutout innings to win his fourth consecutive start, Adrian Beltre homered and drove in three runs, and visiting Texas beat the New York Yankees. One night after Texas rallied for a 9-6 win at 2:44 a.m. following a 3½-hour rain delay in the ninth inning, the Rangers again played with plenty of spunk and energy. They've won four in a row and 12 of 14, improving the American League’s top record to 51-27 with their eighth straight victory away from home.

Hamels (9-1) yielded six harmless singles and struck out seven. He threw only 86 pitches and outdueled CC Sabathia (5-5) in a matchup of accomplished lefthanders.

Cubs 7, Reds 2 — Kris Bryant singled home the tiebreaking run in the 15th inning and the Cubs used three pitchers in left field while beating host Cincinnati in the longest game of the season for both teams.

With the Cubs out of position players, relievers Travis Wood and Spencer Patton (1-0) alternated between left field and the mound in the 14th inning, which ended with Patton getting the final out. Wood then finished it off with reliever Pedro Strop in left.

Bryant’s only hit on Tuesday — a single off J.J. Hoover (1-2) — snapped the tie. Javier Baez added a grand slam in the 15th.

Tigers 7, Marlins 5 — Miguel Cabrera’s three-run homer highlighted a seven-run fifth inning for Detroit, and the host Tigers went on to beat Miami.

Jose Iglesias and Nick Castellanos also homered during Detroit’s big inning, which came after Adam Conley (4-5) had been dominant through four. Mike Pelfrey (2-7) allowed four runs and 12 hits in 5? innings, and that was enough for the win.

Nationals 5, Mets 0 — Lucas Giolito threw four scoreless innings in his rain-shortened major league debut as host Washington beat New York.

Baseball’s top pitching prospect allowed just one hit — a leadoff single — struck out one and walked two before a lengthy rain delay ended his outing.

The 21-year-old Giolito threw 29 of his 45 pitches for strikes and was in command against the Mets like a seasoned veteran.

Twins 4, White Sox 0 — Brian Dozier homered twice and drove in four runs, Kyle Gibson pitched seven innings of five-hit ball for his first victory of the season, and visiting Minnesota blanked Chicago.

Cardinals 8, Royals 4 — Just about everybody in the Cardinals lineup drove in a run, Michael Wacha was good enough on the mound, and visiting St. Louis held off Kansas City to even their four-game, two-city series.

Dodgers 6, Brewers 5 — Adrian Gonzalez had three hits as visiting Los Angeles defeated Milwaukee.
