For the past two years, I have listened to and read (in the Globe) repeated studies showing that those who voted for or support President Trump are people who didn’t graduate college and are less educated. The inference is that Trump supporters are less intelligent.
Now we have a letter from Tom Mirabile (“It’s Trump’s base whose psyche we should be probing,’’ Jan. 24), which suggests that those who continue to support the president should be psychologically evaluated. The implication is that there is something mentally wrong with them.
I am not a Trump supporter. However, if Mirabile, the Globe, and most of the media are “baffled’’ by Trump supporters’ anger and their unwillingness to change their attitudes toward the president, they need look no further than themselves as a reason.
What these commentators are insinuating is that those who don’t agree with the way they think must be stupid or crazy. What they fail to grasp is that continuing to call people who don’t agree with you uneducated or mentally imbalanced is divisive and demeaning.
If they think that this type of derogation will bring people around to their way of thinking, perhaps it is they who need to be evaluated.
