The case against the mother of Bella Bond, the 2-year-old girl whose body was found in a trash bag on Deer Island in 2015, is set for trial on Feb. 27.
A Suffolk Superior Court judge set the new date during a hearing Thursday in the case against Rachelle Bond, after the denial of defense motions to either throw out the case or move it to a venue where there had been less media coverage.
Bond, 41, is facing allegations that she helped her former boyfriend, Michael P. McCarthy, dispose of the child’s body after he allegedly killed her.
Bella Bond was long known simply as Baby Doe during a public campaign to identify her in the summer of 2015.
McCarthy, 36, faces a first-degree murder charge in the case. Bond’s attorney, Janice Bassil, has said Bond intends to testify against him.
Bond allegedly told police when she was arrested in 2015 that McCarthy had offered to put Bella to sleep on the night she died. However, Bond later saw him standing over the girl, whose face had turned swollen and gray, prosecutors have said.
Authorities have said Bond told them she saw McCarthy “either striking or applying pressure to Bella’s abdominal area.’’
McCarthy allegedly put Bella’s body into a garbage bag and left it in a refrigerator for days before he and Bond dumped it into the water in South Boston, according to prosecutors.
Bassil has previously questioned the evidence against her client, saying that Bond was in fear and didn’t willingly participate in the disposal of the girl’s body.
She also asked Judge Janet Sanders, who will handle the case at trial, to throw out evidence seized from the cellphones of Bond and McCarthy.
In a motion filed in court, Bond’s defense argued that information from those phones was gathered through illegal searches.
